Get a Library Card


Getting a library card is easy!

You are eligible for a free library card if you live, own property, work, or attend school in Hardin County. This card can be used at the Main Library and on the Bookmobile. For those who do not meet these criteria, a non-resident library card is available for an annual fee of $10.00.


How to Register:  You may register in person at the Main Library or on the Bookmobile during normal operating hours.

  • Present your library card every time you check out items or use a computer.
  • If you forget your card, photo identification may be used instead.


Adult Library Card: for residents, workers, property owners, or students in Hardin County

Requirements:

  • Present valid photo identification issued by a legitimate government agency. Must be current.
  • Examples: Driver’s license, military ID, passport, state ID
  • If no photo ID is available, obtain one with your birth certificate and social security card.
  • Proof of current address may be required if not included on photo ID:
  • Mail postmarked within 2 weeks
  • Pay stub issued within 2 weeks
  • Voter registration card
  • Lease/deed agreement
  • Utility bill dated within 1 month

Note: A PO Box cannot serve as a street address but may be used as a mailing address.

Non-local verification:

  • If not residing in Hardin County, proof must show you own property, work, or attend school in the county:
  • Work or school ID
  • School report card
  • Pay stub
  • Property tax notification


Non-Resident Library Card

  • Present valid ID and proof of current address (see Adult Library Card requirements).
  • Pay $10 annual fee (cash or check).
  • Cards expire after 1 year and are renewed only after paying the next year’s fee.
  • All fines and fees must be cleared before renewal.


Juvenile Library Card (children under 18)

  • Parent or legal guardian signature required; parent assumes legal responsibility.
  • Only one card issued per child; one parent signs for responsibility.
  • If parents share joint custody and live in the county, only one card is issued.
  • Address handling: Parent’s address used as mailing address; child’s address entered as alternate.

Renewals:

  • Cards expire 1 year from the date of issue.
  • Parent or guardian must present ID with current address.
  • Borrowers aged 16–17 may use their Kentucky driver’s license to update registration.
  • All fines and lost materials must be cleared before renewal.

Restrictions:

  • First-time Juvenile Card holders may check out up to 5 items.
  • No DVDs may be checked out on Juvenile Library Cards.


Temporary Library Card

Eligibility: Visitors, temporary workers, or long-term relatives in Hardin County.

Requirements:

  • Valid photo ID
  • Proof of temporary residency
  • Proof of permanent address

Restrictions:

  • Limit of 5 items at a time; must be returned before borrowing more
  • Cannot borrow DVDs, videos, audiobooks, or interlibrary loan materials
  • Card expires after 180 days and cannot be renewed


Card Renewal

  • All library cards expire 1 year from the date issued.
  • Proof of address required at renewal.
  • Overdue materials and fines/fees must be paid in full before renewal.


Lost or Stolen Cards

  • Report immediately at (270) 769-6337.
  • Borrowed items remain your responsibility.
  • Replacement fee applies.


Change of Address

  • Report any changes to your address, phone number, or name to the library.


Borrower Responsibilities

  • DO report any lost or damaged materials.
  • DO notify the library immediately if your card is lost (270) 769-6337.
  • DO NOT lend your card to others — items checked out on your card are your responsibility.
