Brenda G. Macy has been Director, Hardin County Public Library since 1983. A graduate of Murray State University (B.A., 1975) and the University of Kentucky (MSLS, 1980), she began her library career in 1976 as an elementary school librarian with Crittenden County Schools. During her tenure, the library has seen many positive changes. The audiovisual collection has expanded to include audiobook in both cassette and CD formats as well as videos and DVDs. The library was the fourth public library in Kentucky to automate its Library Catalog in 1992. Now library users can use the catalog online to check for materials, reserve and renew books, and manage their accounts. The library started offering free internet access to the public starting with two computers at the Main library and now has ten internet access terminals at the main and seven and the branch. There are also designated computers for those wishing to prepare resumes, write letters, prepare PowerPoint presentations, and other computing needs. She works closely with the Board of Trustees to formulate and fund the programs and services needed to make a positive impact on our community. Of primary interest, she has been working on providing online databases so our users can have the most accurate, up-to-date information available for research and life-long learning. The library has joined a consortium of like-minded libraries to offer e-book and e-audio. One of the highlights of her career is the work she did on working with the architects to design the new Main Library and the remodeled Branch Library. As a member of the Kentucky Library Association/Kentucky Public Library Association, she has served on the Insurance and Legislative committees (KPLA), served as chair of the KPLA Scholarships and Awards committee, and held the KPLA offices of secretary, vice-chair, and chair. Brenda loves to read and is passionate about gardening.
