FINE-FREE is here to stay...

Hardin County Public Library has now joined the majority of public libraries in Kentucky and across the country who have permanently eliminated late fines.  The board of trustees recently voted unanimously to remain fine free.

We want to remove any barriers to library services that may affect our citizens who most need our services. We are hoping the cessation of late fines will lead to more library users returning their overdue materials which helps us in the long run. We won’t have to repurchase materials or spend time and resources trying to get in touch with overdue patrons. Check out times for most items have returned to 14 days but you can renew your item by phone or through your library account, provided it is not on reserve for someone else.

However, in order to remain good stewards of public funds, the library will still charge full replacement costs for lost or damaged items. Patrons have a responsibility to return library items in a timely manner so that others can enjoy them. The whole premise of public libraries is based upon the sharing of public resources throughout the community.
